Connectors for coaxial cables are available in many variants. There are various reasons for this, mostly special connectors were created for special applications. Criteria were robustness and water protection (outdoor use, antennas), the possibility to disconnect and reconnect connectors very often quickly (laboratory and measurement technology), connectors for very high frequencies and with a small design (device cabling) and of course the price.
This has resulted in a very wide variety of coax connectors over the last decades, exactly matching the respective application. In professional outdoor applications mostly N, C or 7/16" connectors are used, in indoor applications BNC or SMA, in industrial communication systems often TNC, in amateur radio very often PL (SO-239). The explosive boom in the Wifi area has led to many more variants, because the inner conductor has been exchanged, so-called "Reverse Polarity" connectors.
One last criterion is the assembly technique - coax connectors are either soldered, screwed or crimped.
A coax plug must fit exactly for the respective cable type, this is especially true for crimp plugs. Here, a deviation of a few tenths of a millimetre is already decisive as to whether a connector fits the cable or not.
WiMo offers a very large selection of coaxial plugs of all types and for many cable thicknesses. We are happy to help you with your selection.
