The MFJ-1886 is a receive only loop with amplifier (active antenna). As a loop type antenna it has good proprties espeically on the low bands, for example a relatively low noise. Interference due to QRM and QRN is significantly reduced, this leads to a better signal to noise ratio and better overall reception. The MFJ-1886 loop covers the frequency range from 500 kHz to 30 MHz. Like a large dipole this antenna has distinct 'nulls' and directivity. A rotor would be welcome, but is not strictly necessary. You can install the antenna so that the nulls are directed towards constant interferers, or point the maxima towards the preferred area of reception. PLease note that this antenna is not suitable for transmission!

Included in delivery is the mounting material for a mast of max. 42mm diameter, a 12V power supply and the Bias-T (DC feed) is also included. You still need coaxial cable from the antenna to the Bias-T, and from the Bias-T to the receiver. The cable type is uncritical as possible cable losses are more than compensated by the amplifier. As with any antenna, the installation location should be as high as possible and slightly away from the building. But also close to the building, for example on a balcony, this loop will give better results than a end-fed wire as it is often used for reception. The low weight of less than 4kg also allows temporary installation on a photo tripod or similar.
